Pre-registration for Irish-language classes | Réamhchlárú do ranganna Gaeilge

Irish Language Classes for Children

Ottawa Irish Arts is glad to say the Ottawa Catholic School Board has their pre-registration ready for Irish-language classes. (Gaelic message follows)
Tá áthas orm a rá go bhfuil an réamhchlárú réidh ag an Bord Scoile Caitliceach do ranganna Gaeilge.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board is asking parents who have children aged K-8 interested in Irish-language classes to submit pre-registrations. Classes may start as early as January 2018!

The proposed time is Saturday mornings, and the proposed location is Mother Theresa School in Barrhaven. The location may still change based on information collected in the pre-registration, so please submit the form even if you would prefer a different location.

As well, there is no obligation yet to commit every Saturday morning by submitting the pre-registration form as the main goal of pre-registration is to gauge interest.

Please spread the links below and the flyer from the Board attached to anyone with school-aged children as we need around 20 students approximately the same age to open a class.

If the Board get enough pre-registration submissions, the classes will be free for any student from kindergarten to grade 8 in Ontario (no matter if enrolled in the Catholic board, public board, French school, home-school or private school). Québec residents will have to pay $160 per semester.

------------------

Tá an Bord ag lorg réamh-chláraithe ar dhaoine a bhfuil suim a gcuid páistí idir aois naíscoile go dtí an 8ú ghrád sa bhunscoil a chlárú i ranganna Gaeilge. D'fhéadadh tús a chur ar ranganna chomh luath le Mí Eanáir 2018!

Tá rún ag an Bhord na ranganna a chur i bhfeidhm maidin Dé Sathairn sa Scoil Mother Theresa in Barrhaven. Seans go n-athróidh láthair na ranganna de réir an eolais atá le bailiú, mar sin, ar mhiste libh an réamhchlárú a chur isteach cé nach mbeadh an áit mholta foirfe oiriúnach daoibh.

Níl aon ghá daoibh go fóill an Satharn a chomaid saor i ndiaidh réamhchláraithe a chur isteach mar an príomh-aidhm ar an réamhchlárú ná suim an phobail a mheas.

Scaip na nascanna agus an bileog ón Bhord (Béarla) ceangailte seo thíos le bhur dtoil d'éinne le páistí ar aois scoile, toisc go bhfuil timpeall le 20 scolaire de dhíth orainn chun aon rang a thosnú.

Má tá go leor cláraithe curtha isteach chuig an Bhord, beidh na ranganna saor in aisce do scolaire ar bith in Ontario (is cuma má tá siad sa Bhord Caitliceach, poiblí, na Fraincise, nó i scoil bhaile nó phriobháideach). Caithfidh scolaire a chónaíonn in Québec $160 a íoc ar sheimeastar.

Celtic Languages: From the Viking Age to Modern Times -- Call for Papers and Conference

naaclt.org

Celtic Languages: From the Viking Age to Modern Times

21st NAACLT Conference, 4-6 June 2015, Portland Oregon

Since 1995 the North American Association for Celtic Language Teachers (NAACLT) has convened an Annual Conference where presentations on various topics relating to teaching and research in Celtic languages are made. The conferences have been very successful in enabling those active in the teaching of Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Manx, Welsh, Breton and Cornish to convene, share ideas, concerns, and maintain further contact.

The conferences are held in different places every year. In 2015 is Portland's turn. In 2013 we were quite lucky to have the conference here in town, at Ottawa University.

The theme this year is “Celtic Languages: From the Viking Age to Modern Times.

Dates: 4-6 June 2015

Location: Portland, Oregon

For conference details (including registration), check: http://www.naaclt.org/registration---conference.php

Also there is a call for papershttp://www.naaclt.org/resources/Call%20For%20Papers.pdf

NAACLT is offering a $100 scholarship for financial assistance to partially offset the cost of attending the conference. If you are interested in presenting a paper and would benefit from this modest scholarship, please indicate on your submission of the paper that you would like to be considered for the scholarship

Come and celebrate Celtic languages in Oregon 2015!

NAACLT is a non-profit professional organization whose goal is to bring together Celtic language teachers and researchers in Canada and the United States and to foster contacts with others through the world who are interested in promoting the teaching and learning of Celtic languages in North America.

Irish Language - Part 2

Wikipedia tell us that the Irish language (Gaeilge) has been historically spoken by the Irish people. It is spoken as a first language by a small minority of Irish people, and as a second language by a rather larger group. It enjoys constitutional status as the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland. It is an official language of the European Union and an officially recognised minority language in Northern Ireland.

Irish was the predominant language of the Irish people for most of their recorded history, they brought it with them to other countries, such as Scotland and the Isle of Man, where it gave rise to Scottish Gaelic and Manx.

Irish speakers in Ireland congregate in areas collectively known as the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking region where the government recognises Irish as the predominant language). North America has the first permanent and officially recognized Gealtacht outside Ireland, and can be found in Tamworth, Ontario. The Permanent North American Gaeltacht, was established on 16 June 2007. One of the founders of the North American Gaeltacht is a Comhaltas member, Aralt Mac Giolla Chainnigh.

Irish Language

The Irish Language is one of the six Celtic languages, the others being Scottish Gaelic, Manx, Cornish, Welsh, and Breton. In pronunciation, Irish most closely resembles its nearest relatives, Scottish Gaelic and Manx.

Gaeilge, also known as Irish Gaelic or Gaelic, is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European language family (Indo-European → Celtic → Insular Celtic → Goidelic → Irish), historically spoken by the Irish people.

Irish is now spoken as a first language by a minority of Irish people, as well as being a second language of a larger proportion of the population. Around the turn of the 21st century, estimates of native speakers ranged from 20,000 to 80,000 people. In the 2011 census for the Republic, 94,000 people reported using Irish as a daily language outside of the education system, and 1.3 million reported using it at least occasionally in or out of school. Currently the UNESCO has classified the Irish language as “Definitely Endangered.”

There are also thousands of Irish speakers in Northern Ireland, and a comparable number of fluent speakers in the United States and Canada. Historically the island of Newfoundland had a dialect of Irish Gaelic, called Newfoundland Irish.

Listen to a documentary that explains all disappearing languages in the world. The Irish part starts about 05:40 of the 12+ minutes. As part of "The Gathering Ireland 2013", http://www.thegatheringireland.com/ and "The Year of the Irish Language", http://gaeilge2013.ie/ they will be as excited to meet us as we are to meet them. It is expected that this will forge lasting friendships between individuals, and lasting connections between Irish speaking organizations in North America and Ireland. Since local events will be hosted by the various Gaeltacht communities, we are able to keep our costs to a bare minimum.

Faill an tSaoil. Cuairt chomhphobail go ceantair na Gaeltachta in Éirinn.

Dátaí: 20 Deireadh Fómhair – 2 Samhain 2013

Beimid ag súil go mbunófar ceangal agus cairdeas idir daoine aonaracha sa dá dhream, agus idir eagraíochtaí Gaeilge i Meiriceá Thuaidh agus in Éirinn. Cuirfidh na pobail Ghaeltachta áitiúla aíocht ar ghníomhaíochtaí an turais, agus mar sin beidh muid in ann ár gcostas a choinneáil ar an íosmhéid lom.

International Small Grants scheme -- Financial support for Irish Language Events

International Small Grants scheme July December 2013.

Glór na nGael has announced a funding/grant support scheme which will run with assistance from the Department of Foreign Afairs and Trade, for committees across the globe who have plans to promote the Irish language.

Committees are invited to submit their plans for events which will take place between July 1st and December 31st 2013. Plans must include details on target groups, dates and estimated costs, and should be submitted to Glór na nGael, Ráth Chairn, Co na Mí by June 30th.

Any events being submitted for consideration must be language based. Among qualifying event there are intensive courses, lectures and debates, quizes, and play events for childrens through Irish. Writing and arts events, are also eleigible as are information and awareness talks through Irish. 'Cultural' events which are not through Irish do not qualify.

The grants are limited to €500 for any single group, and since the overall amount available is limited it is hoped that funding can be spread to more events costing less than to events costing more. Every application will be evaluated and a record will be kept of all entries, successful or otherwise and these will be entered in Global Gaeilge 2013. Applying for the scheme gives automatic entry to Global Gaeilge.

As part of the Global Gaeilge 2013 judging all successful groups will be re-assessed in January 2014 along with other entries for Global Gaeilge who did not receive a support grant. Application for entry in the support grant scheme is not a condition of entry in Global Gaeilge.

Scéim na nDeontas Idirnáisiúnta Iúil – Nollag 2013

Reachtáilfear scéim mhaoinithe/deontais i mbliana, le cúnamh na Roinne Gnóthaí Eachtracha agus Trádála, dírithe ar choistí ar fud an domhain, a bhfuil plean acu an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn.

Tabharfar cuireadh do choistí plean imeachtí Gaeilge, don tréimhse 1 Iúil agus 31 Nollaig 2013, a bhfuil spriocanna, dátaí agus costais measta leo, a chur isteach chuig Glór an nGael roimh an 30 Meitheamh 2013.

Ní mór do na himeachtaí a bheith teanga bhunaithe. I measc na n-imeachtaí a bheidh incháilithe beidh dianchúrsaí, léachtaí agus díospóireachtaí, tráth na gceist trí Ghaeilge, imeachtaí súgartha agus spraoi trí Ghaeilge do pháistí, comórtais scríbhneoireachta nó ealaíne trí Ghaeilge, oícheanta feasachta agus eolais trí Ghaeilge agus imeachtaí eile mar iad. Beidh imeachtaí 'cultúrtha' nach imeachtaí Gaeilge iad, dí-cháilithe.

Beidh uasmhéid thacaíochta, €500, d'aon imeachta faoi scéim seo, ach ós rud gur ciste teoranta atá ann, bheifear ag súil le maoiniú a chur ar fáil do imeachtaí nach gcosnóidh an t-uasmhéid sin. Déanfar gach iarratas a mheasúnú, agus coinneofar taifead de gach iarratas, rathúil nó eile, mar iontráil i gcomórtas Global Gaeilge 2013. Is ionann iarratas a dhéanamh, agus clárú do chomórtas Global Gaeilge 2013.

Mar chuid de phróiseas moltóireachta Global Gaeilge 2013, déanfar na scéimeanna a mhaoineofar a scrúdú ina athuair le linn Mí Eanáir 2014 chomh maith le hiarratais eile a thiocfaidh isteach don chomórtas. Ní critéir do Global Gaeilge í, tacaíocht mhaoinithe scéime a lorg faoin scéim seo.

Speak Irish!

The Department of Celtic Studies of the University of Ottawa welcomes you to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge by practicing your Irish

2013 is the Year of Irish, and as a celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge - Irish Week, we will be hosting a reception here in the university. We will come together on March 22nd, between 5-7, at Room 509 in the Arts Building, to speak and celebrate our language. It's very important that we show how much we treasure Irish. I hope to have you join us for the get-together! Food and drink will be served. Do join!

Is é 2013 Bliain na Gaeilge, agus mar cheiliúradh Sheachtain na Gaeilge, beidh fáiltiú á chur i láthair againn anseo san Ollscoil. Tiocfaidh muid le chéile ar an 22ú Márta, idir 5 agus a 7, ag an bhFoirgneamh Arts, Seomra 509, chun an teanga a labhairt agus a cheiliúradh. Tá sé tábhachtach go dtaispeánann muid cé chomh gar is atá an Ghaeilge donár gcroíthe! Tá súil agam go mbeidh deis agaibh bheith inár dteannta don slógadh! Beidh neart bia agus dí le fáil chomh maith. Bígí linn!
