Pre-registration for Irish-language classes | Réamhchlárú do ranganna Gaeilge

Irish Language Classes for Children

Ottawa Irish Arts is glad to say the Ottawa Catholic School Board has their pre-registration ready for Irish-language classes. (Gaelic message follows)
Tá áthas orm a rá go bhfuil an réamhchlárú réidh ag an Bord Scoile Caitliceach do ranganna Gaeilge.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board is asking parents who have children aged K-8 interested in Irish-language classes to submit pre-registrations. Classes may start as early as January 2018!

The proposed time is Saturday mornings, and the proposed location is Mother Theresa School in Barrhaven. The location may still change based on information collected in the pre-registration, so please submit the form even if you would prefer a different location.

As well, there is no obligation yet to commit every Saturday morning by submitting the pre-registration form as the main goal of pre-registration is to gauge interest.

Please spread the links below and the flyer from the Board attached to anyone with school-aged children as we need around 20 students approximately the same age to open a class.

If the Board get enough pre-registration submissions, the classes will be free for any student from kindergarten to grade 8 in Ontario (no matter if enrolled in the Catholic board, public board, French school, home-school or private school). Québec residents will have to pay $160 per semester.

------------------

Tá an Bord ag lorg réamh-chláraithe ar dhaoine a bhfuil suim a gcuid páistí idir aois naíscoile go dtí an 8ú ghrád sa bhunscoil a chlárú i ranganna Gaeilge. D'fhéadadh tús a chur ar ranganna chomh luath le Mí Eanáir 2018!

Tá rún ag an Bhord na ranganna a chur i bhfeidhm maidin Dé Sathairn sa Scoil Mother Theresa in Barrhaven. Seans go n-athróidh láthair na ranganna de réir an eolais atá le bailiú, mar sin, ar mhiste libh an réamhchlárú a chur isteach cé nach mbeadh an áit mholta foirfe oiriúnach daoibh.

Níl aon ghá daoibh go fóill an Satharn a chomaid saor i ndiaidh réamhchláraithe a chur isteach mar an príomh-aidhm ar an réamhchlárú ná suim an phobail a mheas.

Scaip na nascanna agus an bileog ón Bhord (Béarla) ceangailte seo thíos le bhur dtoil d'éinne le páistí ar aois scoile, toisc go bhfuil timpeall le 20 scolaire de dhíth orainn chun aon rang a thosnú.

Má tá go leor cláraithe curtha isteach chuig an Bhord, beidh na ranganna saor in aisce do scolaire ar bith in Ontario (is cuma má tá siad sa Bhord Caitliceach, poiblí, na Fraincise, nó i scoil bhaile nó phriobháideach). Caithfidh scolaire a chónaíonn in Québec $160 a íoc ar sheimeastar.

2017 Arnprior Irish Weekend

Arnprior 2017

This year’s Arnprior experience probably stood out most for its strong youth representation with great support from the ICUF scholars from the University of Ottawa and Concordia University. By the way, the University of Ottawa Celtic Studies Program (whose students have recently relaunched the Celtic Studies Club wiith a GAA session and a pub night with more to come) as well as from Montréal’s Comhrá group (see links below). All in attendance highly appreciated the supportive atmosphere that the members of the Irish community fostered to allow learners and fluent speakers to practice their Irish.

An mhéad sin spraoi ag daoine ag an chéilí mór.

Bígí linn an bhliain seo chugainn!

Don’t miss out next year! Rumour has it Toni and Dara have an even more outrageous skit planned. Next year's dates are: 28-30 September. We will have even more workshops, singing, music, good meals, and Gaeilge (of course)! We are also aiming to get a Facebook event page up for next year's Deireadh Seachtaine so you can share that with your Gaelic friends from all over the world (keep in contact with us to get news of any changes and other Irish-language weekends).

( Visit the Ottawa Irish Arts Booth at this spectacular event! )

A celebration of Ireland in Canada as part of Ottawa 2017

Ottawa Welcomes the World: Ireland

Friday, 16 June 2017; Horticulture Building, Lansdowne Park, Ottawa; 10:00 am to 10:00 pm

In this landmark year for Canada, the Embassy of Ireland, together with Irish community organisations across Canada, is proud to present a celebration of the deep and strong bonds of friendship that Ireland and Canada have long enjoyed as part of the "Ottawa Welcomes the World" series of free events at Lansdowne Park.

Ireland is delighted to showcase a day-long programme of Irish music, dance, and theatre. A warm Irish welcome awaits visitors as they take an exciting journey through Ireland's stunning scenery, and explore the vibrancy of the Irish community in Canada, taking in Gaelic sports, film, and crafts along the way.

June 16 is Bloomsday, the day on which James Joyce's celebrated novel Ulysses is set and which is observed annually around the world. Visitors are invited to meet some of his characters, find out more about Joyce and his work, and enjoy some Joycean music and excerpts.

The children's programme includes a wide range of interactive activities for all ages. Families will have the opportunity to listen to our resident story‑tellers, learn about some traditional crafts, and try some Gaelic football and hurling, as well as to learn some phrases in Irish and some dance steps, or how to play some Irish music.

OTTAWA WELCOMES THE WORLD Series
Embassies and high commissions will showcase their country's culture in a series of world‑class free events at Lansdowne Park. As part of the Ottawa 2017 signature event series, more than 75 countries and international partners will celebrate their culture through food tasting, musical celebrations, artistic performances and more! This celebration of Canada's diversity and rich multicultural heritage will promote and strengthen ties between nations on the occasion of Canada's 150th anniversary. Annual Student Symposium at Ottawa U and Irish language

'A student symposium was held at the University of Ottawa recently for undergraduate students. Among the students chosen by the Faculty of Arts to take part, were three students from the Irish language class. Each presented on the Irish language today, the history associated with the language and the systems currently in place for the progression of Irish in the future. The symposium incorporated world cultures and it was particularly wonderful to therefore have the Irish language represented at it'.

'Cuireadh siompóisiam ar siúl le déanaí in ollscoil Ottawa dona mic léinn i mbun na buncéime a bhaint amach. I measc na ndaltaí a bhí roghnaithe chun páirt a ghlacadh, bhí triúr ón rang Gaeilge. Dhein siad cur i láthair ar an nGaeilge mar theanga inniu, an stair a bhaineann leis an nGaeilge agus an córas atá i bhfeidhm anois chun an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn in Éirinn. Siompóisiam ar chultúir éagsúla timpeall na cruinne a bhí ann agus b'iontach an rud é go raibh trí chur i láthair ar an nGaeilge'.

Caint is Comhrá and Shakespeare 400 - Hamlet in Irish

Hamlet in Irish

On April 8th 2016, members of 'Caint & Comhrá' took part in a reading of Hamlet at the University of Ottawa. A celebration of Shakespeare 400 was taking place & Hamlet was read in 37 languages, including Irish! We enjoyed translating the particular scenes, which we did in Irish and it was read in the Freiman Recital Hall at the university.

'Ar an 8ú Aibreán ghlac baill 'Caint & Comhrá' páirt i léiriú Hamlet a bhí ar siúl in Ollscoil Ottawa. Céiliúradh 400 bliain de shaothar Shakespeare a bhí i gceist. Cuireadh an dráma ar siúl i 37 teanga agus an Ghaeilge ina measc! Bhí spórt agus spraoi againn ag déanamh aistriúcháin ar na radharcanna a tugadh dúinn agus cuireadh i láthair é ar an stáitse i Halla Freiman san ollscoil.'

Tuairisc ó Ottawa! Mí Eanáir 2016 - My time teaching in Ottawa, January 2016

Tuairisc ó Ottawa!

Mí Eanáir 2016.

Is anseo in Ottawa, príomhchathair Cheanada, atáim lonnaithe ó mhí Mheáin Fómhair seo caite. Ón gcéad lá gur thosnaíos ag múineadh Gaeilge in Ollscoil Ottawa bhí fuinneamh le mothú sa timpeallacht. Os cionn seasca mac léinn a dhéanann staidéar ar an nGaeilge i rith seimeastar an fhómhair gach bliain. Dhá rang a bhíonn ann, roinnte idir beirt mhúinteoir. Anois, agus seimeastar an gheimhridh buailte linn, rang amháin a bhíonn ann. Cé go mbíonn níos lú i gcónaí ag iarraidh tuilleadh Gaeilge a fhoghlaim i ndiaidh na Nollag, níl aon dabht faoi ach go bhfuil dearcadh thar a bheith dearfach ag an dream díograiseach seo. Níl sé éasca dona mic léinn tabhairt faoin dteanga nua seo ach idir mhodhanna múinte éagsúla agus ag coimeád an teanga beo bríomhar sa seomra ranga, éiríonn go geal leo agus is minic a bhíonn sceitimíní orthu ag cleachtadh labhairt na Gaeilge!

Ní hí an teanga an t-aon ghné de shaol na hÉireann atá á mhúineadh agam anseo i gCeanada. An seimeastar seo, múinim lucht na tríú bliana. Is mic léinn iad a dhein stáidéar ar chuid dena teangacha Ceilteacha cheana féin agus anois atá i mbun stáidéir a dhéanamh ar an stair a bhaineann leo agus ar an stádás a bhíonn acu ina dtíortha féin.

Ní féidir a shéanadh ach go bhfuil pobal Gaelach fíor-láidir anseo sa phríomhchathair. Múinim dhá rang ostoíche mar chuid dena ceachtanna a bhíonn ar fáil trí Caint ‘is Comhrá. Mhúineas ag an Lá Gaeilge a bhí ar siúl acu i mí na Samhna agus ag an tum-deireadh seachtaine a bhí faoi bhun acu sa bhfómhar. Bhí cultúr na Gaeilge fite fuaite leis an teanga ag na hocáidí seo. Is iontach an rud é nuair a fheicim na hócáidí seo agus na céilithe a ritheann Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Ottawa, ag dul ó neart go neart idir Éireannaigh agus Ceanadaigh! D’oibrigh mé leis an dream céanna chun cabhrú leis an iarracht domhanda mar chuid de Chomhrá ’15.

‘An rud is annamh is iontach’ agus sin díreach cad atá i gceist leis an nGaeltacht anseo in Ontario, idir Ottawa ‘is Kingston. Níl ach tréimhse gearr caite agam ann go fóill don Lá Oibre agus mar sin táim ag tnúth le teacht an earraigh nuair a bheidh tuilleadh laethanta le caitheamh ann.

Tá an-bhaint go deo agam leis an Ionad Ealaíon agus Cultúir, Ionad Naomh Bhríde. Sin an t-ionad náisiúnta dona na hÉireannaigh anseo thar sáile. Idir Cheanadaigh agus Éireannaigh a fhreastlaíonn ar na himeachtaí, idir dhaoine a rugadh in Éirinn agus i gCeanada ach an cheangail a bhíonn eatarthu ná gurb í Éire an áit arbh as formhór a sinsearach. Chuaigh sé i bhfeidhm orm bualadh leis an gcéad mhúinteoir a bhí ag múineadh Gaeilge anseo in Ottawa; bean sna nócaidí a d’fhág Corcaigh ar bhád sna daichidí déanacha ‘is í ag tabhairt aire d’á páistí. Tá an-mheas go deo agam uirthi, mar atá ag muintir Ottawa, ag éisteacht leis na scéalta a bhíonn aici agus an slí ina chur sí múineadh na Gaeilge chun tosaigh i gcónaí anseo i gCeanada.

I láthair na huaire, táim gnóthach ag eagrú imeachtaí le haghaidh Seachtain na Gaeilge. Cé go mbeidh cúpla ócáid faoi leith ar siúl san ollscoil beidh roinnt mhaith ar siúl sa mhórphobal chomh maith! Tá baill Caint ‘is Comhrá ag eagrú iad féin chun teacht chuig ceann dena ranganna san ollscoil go luath le haghaidh ócáide a bheidh ar siúl againn ‘is tá gach éinne ag tnúth leis! Tá baint agam ón bhfómhar le Ottawa Gaels agus Éire Óg, agus beidh siad ag tabhairt cuairte ar mo rang ollscoile go luath freisin chun baill fóirne a mhealladh sula dtosnaíonn an traenáil arís don athbhliain!

‘Is mé ag siúl thar Chnoc Parlaiminte gach lá, tugaim áilleacht na cathrach faoi ndeara agus bím cinnte de go mothóidh mé Ottawa go mór uaim nuair a chríochnóidh mo thréimhse anseo. Éispéireas den chéad scoth atá ann ach mar a deirtear ‘ní bhíonn in aon rud ach seal’.

1916 Centenary Commemorations in Canada's National Capital

http://www.gaeilge.ca/1916---b%C3%A9arla.php

A Celebration of the Irish Republic, Irish Language and the Irish Canadian Identity

2016 marks the 100th year since the declaration of an Irish Republic in 1916. The Uprising, of which the Declaration was a part, had enormous implications in Ireland, Canada, and worldwide. In Canada, it made public an Irish Canadian identity which supported political independence for the ancestral homeland; the Self Determination for Ireland League of Canada boasted a membership of 300,000. It also represented the high-water mark for the Orange Order in Canada, which numbered 200,000 at the time.

With respect to local politics, the Uprising and the subsequent achievement of independence raised hopes for increased Canadian autonomy. Canadians were becoming bitterly aware, during the First World War, that Dominion Status in an Empire did not equate to international sovereignty.

The leadership of the 1916 Uprising was largely drawn from the Gaelic League, which saw the Irish (Gaelic) language as Ireland's greatest heritage, and the key to Irish emancipation. For this reason, the lectures will be given in Irish (Gaelic), with simultaneous translation. The lectures will be followed by a commemorative service in Irish (Gaelic) and a singing workshop in the traditional style (Sean Nós) in Irish (Gaelic).

A student's reflection on the Arnprior Irish language immersion weekend

I remember when I first came to the Arnprior immersion weekend someone said "you'd be surprised at how much Irish you learn in just one weekend."

Five years of tenses, genders, cases, and mutations (these are sexier than their English name suggest) later, it was sometimes difficult to keep this in mind. Two days could not possibly matter when faced with the immense task that is mastering a language. But in fact, every language weekend is like an overdue recharge. Two days without cooking. Two days soaking in fresh autumn air. Two days with friends. Two days hearing as much Irish as you desire.

Galilee Mission Centre, Arnprior

Cheap mé gurb fhéidir liom é sin a scríobh as Gaeilge go léir, ach faraor tá mé fós níos compórdaigh dul i muinín an Bhéarla. Tá mé sásta, sin ráite, chun mo chuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú. Ní hé an deireadh seachtaine seo ach ceann do na seansanna atá ag an phobal na Gaeilge ar fud an domhan taisteál nó daoine suimiúla a chasadh.

The events here use not only language classes to immerse learners, there is also music, dance, and games. Talking about grammar (no matter however necessary at times) will definitely earn prompt and loud 'boo's from the crowd. Not knowing Irish or not knowing "enough" Irish is not considered an original sin because all of us have been there.

The organising committee puts many tireless hours of work into every such event so we learners can worry about nothing but to learn (with, perhaps, the exception of what to perform as a party piece).

In fact, Arnprior is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the federal capital for everyone who has wondered what it would feel like to take part in an immersion environment. Keep an eye out for next year's brochure!

Notes from the CCÉ Ottawa Chair, January 2015

Happy New Year everyone!! I wish you all a bright, happy and healthy 2015.

Language and dance classes are underway. Attendance to the Irish classes was middling on the Monday evening when we resumed classes, but there are two new students in the beginner class. Joan, Barry, and Tomas are back teaching their respective classes. Unfortunately, Oscar Mou cannot teach the beginner classes this semester as he has a course conflict at OttawaU. I want to take this opportunity to officially thank Oscar for teaching the Beginner group all last fall and doing such a great job. The students have said to me that they really enjoyed his classes.

We have had a special request by one of the regular ceil attendees to assist him in surprising his girlfriend with a proposal of marriage at our January ceili. I have indicated that we would be delighted to help out. I suggested that we adapt the bonfire dance so that as many people are on the dance floor and in a circle. I think this is an exciting event to have take place at our ceili. (update: the proposal was accepted!!)

I have contacted the ‘activities coordinator’ for the English Intensive Program at OttawaU and have proposed our ceilis to them. I have also suggested our Monday night dance classes as well. We are still working on the details for the Monday night classes.

Respectfully submitted, Cathaoirleach
