Irish Immersion August 2014!

The Summer Gaeltacht Immersion Week coming up, 10 – 16 August.   As part of the immersion week, They are running for the first time  an Irish Language Teachers’ Workshop on Friday, 15 August.  The workshop will be run by Colette Nic Aodh,  an experienced Irish language teacher and poet, and  one of three teachers participating in our Irish immersion week this year.  

The workshop runs all day Friday from 9:00 to 4:00. The fee for the day is  $30  (each session, morning and afternoon is $10.00 each and lunch is $10.00)

Additional information about the language immersion week is provided below in case you feel that you might like to come for the whole week.

Please respond to me directly if you are interested in attending. I hope many of you can make it.  If you don’t have any camping equipment, don’t let stop you, we have extra tents and sleeping bags...

2014 Oireachtas Gaeilge Cheanada: Tamworth & Dún Laoghaire

Oireachtas Gaeilge Cheanada

Once again this past June (27-29 June), the 2014 Oireachtas Gaeilge Cheanada (Gaeltacht Thuaisceart An Oileáin Úir) was held both in Tamworth and at the Days Inn and Conference Centre in Kingston (Dún Laoghaire), Ontario. This year the weather was sunny and hot, and the competitors had to seek refuge under the tents as the Saturday temperature was well over 30°C!

There were competitions held on the Saturday on the field location of Tamworth. The categories are as follows:

Speaking: Oration, Story Telling, Poetry Recitation, Pair Dialogue

Writing: Poetry, Prose, Learning Books and Aids

Singing: Sean Nós Singing, Singing in Irish (not Sean Nós), Individual, Choir, Lúibíní

Music: Harp, Uilleann Pipes, Céilí Bands

Dancing: Sean Nós, Set Dancing

Oireachtas Gaeilge Cheanada, Celtic Choir.

Several CCE Ottawa members actively participated at the Oireachtas, in music, speaking, Sean Nós dancing, Singing, and Set Dancing.

CCE member Ellen MacIsaac’s Celtic Choir, took the first place (Gold medal) on the Choir competition, the Ottawa Céilí Band took the first price in their category. In the Sing in Styles other than Sean Nós, CCE members were quite successful, Ellen MacIsaac took the 1^st place (gold medal), Síle Scott, the 2nd place (Silver medal), and Oscar Mou was tied for the 3^rd place!  Shadyn Proctor took 2nd place on Sean Nós dancing, and the CCE Ottawa Set Dancers took the first place on Set Dancing for a second year running!

Two Irish poets at Ottawa poetry festival VERSeFest 2014

Speak Irish, part 2! TEG Irish language proficiency exams at the University of Ottawa

Ottawa University has the distinction of being only one of two official testing centers in Canada for the Irish language proficiency test that is recognized internationally. The test is called TEG (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge http://www.teg.ie).

Last year only the A1 level was offered at our testing center in Ottawa. This year both the A1 and A2 levels are offered as long as we get 12 people at each level. The test dates are in May, so there is still time to prepare. They will be similar to the New York times.

For those of you who have learned Irish in Ireland, or others of you have been studying the language regularly here in Canada, the test is a great way to measure your ability in all four skills. The website (http://www.teg.ie) has practice tests for each skill and for all levels

  Preparation Course

 

Community Irish language programs invariably emphasize conversational skills. The TEG also includes reading and writing skills, and hence a student may need to fill in gaps before advancing to the next TEG level. In order to assist students in succeeding at the A1 level, a TEG preparation course is being held at the University of Ottawa 17 – 19 May 2013. This is the weekend immediately prior to the actual A1 examination.

 

The preparation course will include:

• Practice oral examinations
• Practice written tests which will be marked and returned
• Additional preparation in the areas where weaknesses are identified

Program Cost: $100 (does not include meals or accommodation)

The Founding of the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Ottawa Branch, 1975

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann came into being, in County Westmeath in Ireland. The reason flowed from concern, by some Irish traditional musicians, for the disappearance of Irish music. In 1951 a standing committee of Cumann Ceoltóirí Éireann, “Company of Irish Musicians” was established and morphed into Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in the following year, 1952. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in translation means: “Society of Musicians of Ireland” and is normally referred to as “Comhaltas.”

 

It was created as Non-Political, Non-Sectarian organization open to all interested persons. Its aims are:

To promote traditional Irish music; 

• To revive the playing of both the Harp and the Uilleann Pipes;
• To promote traditional Irish dancing; and,
• To promote the knowledge and the use of Irish language.

From the beginning, because of its nature, it gave traditional musicians an appreciative audience as traditional style was the standard employed. With respect to the organization of Comhaltas, the Branch is the most important unit. Since inauguration, Comhaltas has grown over 400 branches spread across four continents. At this time there are over 60 branches in North America.

 

In the declining days of 1974, two [Irish] musicians from Ottawa: Don Kavanagh and Leo Browne went to Montreal to attend a Comhaltas concert. The following year a Comhaltas concert was staged in the auditorium of the Ottawa Technical High School and the Ottawa Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Band was established.

Today the four aims of Comhaltas are being met by the Ottawa Branch:

 

1. The Branch has its own Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Céilí band and traditional musical instruments are made available to learners [CCE Ottawa Branch members] without charge;

 

2. The Branch currently owns two harps and one set of uilleann pipes. The harps are currently on loan to learners [check upcoming instruments news in the CCE website];

 

3. Traditional set, céilí, sean nós, and solo dancing are taught on a weekly basis; and,

 

4. Five different levels of Irish language classes are held on a weekly basis. The group, Caint is Comhrá, runs various Irish language events in the branch.

"An Ghaeltacht sa 21ú hAois" / "The Modern Gaeltacht" / "La Nouvelle Époque du Gaeltacht"

A "Gaeltacht" is defined as any area wherein the Gaelic/Irish language is spoken as the language of communication. Did you know that there was an Irish language spoken around the world today? Did you know there is a "Gaeltacht" in Canada?

What area fits this description, more than a decade in to the new millennium? Does the term "Gaeltacht" even exist any more? Eoin Ó Catháin will attempt to find out more on this question, and perhaps provide an answer. All are welcome.

Eoin Ó Catháin is an ICUF Visiting Scholar living and teaching in Ottawa. He is a native of County Clare, and has spent over 15 years learning Irish, and recently qualified as an Irish and French high school teacher. Language Planning and the Sociolinguistics of the Irish language are two of his main interests as regards the Irish language.

The Lecture will be given in English.
